The blank slab of clay acts as a seismograph. It records field forces, compression, and rarefaction in a space essentially two-dimensional. This information is conveyed by only three elements: the Y, the Arrow, and the Blue Engobe.

The everchanging relationship between these three elements informs and orients the clay surface.

Through repetition and seriality, the viewer drifts from signs to symbols to language.
